We were recently invited aboard the Northlink Ferry to celebrate all things Fairtrade! We got to meet children from other schools in Aberdeen City and once aboard, got to take part in special workshops to inform us about Fairtrade products. We began with a presentation from Bala Sport. The company design footballs in Glasgow and are produced fairly abroad. In Africa, children cannot afford to buy footballs so have to make their own. We worked as a team to make a football from newspaper, plastic bags and string. It showed us what hard work people have to put in. After that, we got a guided tour of the boat. Fairtrade cotton is used in the cabins and they use Fairtrade and local produce as much as possible in their restaurant. The gift shop aboard sells local produce to customers too! The staff make a conscious effort to recycle. Only 8% of waste aboard the ship goes to landfill. Everything else is recycled or reused. A fantastic day out!
