At our Parent Council meeting last week, it was agreed that in order to ensure the safety of the children in our school, we are going to close the school car park to all parents for a trial period.
After trying various initiatives/campaigns and talking with drivers, children are still being put at risk on a daily basis by drivers who make dangerous choices when they enter our car park. The car park was closed for a period of time during road resurfacing on Countesswells Road and the difference was significant in that the school was a much safer place. I am responsible for the health and safety of the children in our school and I am concerned on a daily basis by what I see happening in the car park and by what is reported to me by members of the public.
I was concerned that by closing our car park, this would have implications for the Community Centre car park although I have spoken with Caroline from the Community Centre although she is confident that she is effectively managing the situation in her car park and fully supports our decision to close the school car park.
Trial period: week beginning 4th December 2017 to Friday 19th January 2018. Road Safety Week takes place Monday 15th January and during this week we will look at the results from the trial and make a final decision regarding whether we re-open or keep the car park permanently closed.
Restrictions: The car park will be closed to Nursery to P7 parents/carers during all drop off and pick up times. The car park will be open for parents/carers who need to pick children up for appointments etc during the school day.
If you would like to discuss this further; please feel free to come along to the next Parent Council meeting 17.1.18 or contact me directly.
